Business Communication Teaching Philosophy
112 and 122 examines workplace communication within the context of personal growth and development.
The content of the course centres around how we use language to make judgements and enhance relationships.
Students begin and end each course with self-assessment. An important part of an assessment is how you develop criteria to make your judgements. Researching and analysing criteria leads to the planning and discussions needed to manage extensive group-based writing projects. Both 112 and 122 ask students to work together to develop extensive planning and analysis as part of their process.
I believe the following about teaching Business Communication
1. That the courses should be activity-based and highly involving from the student's point of view.
2. That the writing assignments should be highly challenging from an analytical perspective.
3. That students in multiple sections receive the same amount of assignments and same grade break down but that the actual assignment might vary in detail with instructor.
4. That final exams are not required but that the midterm should be consistent across all sections.
5. That for each assignment students receive at least 1-3 sample assignments in the same genre in which we are trying to teach.
Business Communication offers the opportunity for the student to grow in their analytical and self-assessment capabilities while learning to write effectively.

I am Stan. What defines most people is their age, so I will say that I am 41. The second thing that defines us is our passions: I love to write. I love to teach. And I love to help people achieve their dreams.
My quest for much of my life is to be the classic man for all seasons, the renaissance man. So I can do a lot of things--tennis player, snowboarder, song-writer, designer, photographer, journalist, e-commerce consultant, cook--but I am far from an expert in any of these areas.
And I really ought to finish editing my novel.
I love to learn new things and test myself. I believe that life is about learning and developing a closeness with the people you care about. Do you agree?
